The park and statue were originally dedicated on Memorial Day of 1968 to honor Cincinnati firefighters who have died in the line of duty. An annual service was held at the park on Memorial Day for many years honoring the deceased members of the Cincinnati Fire Department. The event is now held on Wednesday of Fire Prevention Week in October. In 2010, the park was redesigned, and the scope expanded to encompass firefighters throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The Memorial was officially rededicated on October 6, 2010.
